On his journey, he met a hermit who taught him about Christianity and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Reprobus was baptized and given the name Christopher, which means “Christ-bearer.”

As the story spread throughout the village, people began to see St Christopher as a hero, and travelers prayed to him for safe travels.
The St. Christopher Devotion Expands
The story of St. Christopher became popular in the Middle Ages, and he became known as the patron saint of travelers and drivers. Many people began to pray to him for protection during their journeys, and St. Christopher medals were created as a way to carry his protection with them.
The earliest St. Christopher medals were made in the 16th century in Germany and were called “Christopherus” medals. They were made of lead or pewter and were often worn by sailors and travelers.
