The Saint of Travel: St. Christopher

St. Christopher

St. Christopher is a beloved figure in the Catholic faith and is often depicted as a very tall man carrying a child across a river. But what is the origin and history of devotion to St. Christopher, and why do Catholics pray to him and wear St. Christopher medals?

St. Christopher, Patron Saint of TravelersAccording to legend, St. Christopher was a Canaanite man named Reprobus who lived during the third century. He was a large and strong man who wanted to serve the greatest king he could find, so he went to serve a king known for his power and cruelty.

However, he soon realized that the king was afraid of the devil, so he left and set out to find the devil himself.

On his journey, he met a hermit who taught him about Christianity and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Reprobus was baptized and given the name Christopher, which means “Christ-bearer.”

He dedicated his life to carrying people across a dangerous river. One day, he carried a child who later revealed himself to be Jesus Christ.

Once upon a time, in a far-off village, there lived a tall and strong man named Christopher.

He was the strongest man in the village and often helped people carry heavy loads across the river.

One day, a little child asked for his help to cross the river, and Christopher agreed. He placed the child on his shoulder and stepped into the river.

As he crossed the river, the child became heavier and heavier, far heavier than any child his size, and Christopher began to struggle.

Miraculously, however, he managed to cross the river with the child on his shoulder.

As he put the child down on the other shore and caught his breath, Christopher asked the child, “Who are you? You became so heavy that it felt like I was carrying the whole world on my shoulders!”

The child replied, “I am the son of the Almighty God who created the world. You have carried the weight of the world on your shoulders, and I am grateful for your help. From now on, you will be known as St Christopher, the patron saint of travelers.”

St. Christopher

As the story spread throughout the village, people began to see St Christopher as a hero, and travelers prayed to him for safe travels.

The St. Christopher Devotion Expands

The story of St. Christopher became popular in the Middle Ages, and he became known as the patron saint of travelers and drivers. Many people began to pray to him for protection during their journeys, and St. Christopher medals were created as a way to carry his protection with them.

The earliest St. Christopher medals were made in the 16th century in Germany and were called “Christopherus” medals. They were made of lead or pewter and were often worn by sailors and travelers. The medals were usually round or oval in shape and featured an image of St. Christopher carrying the child Jesus on his shoulders.

St. Christopher MedalsOver time, St. Christopher medals became more ornate and were made of silver, gold, or other precious metals. They were often given as gifts to loved ones who were traveling or as a way to express gratitude for a safe journey.

In addition to his role as the patron saint of travelers, St. Christopher is also known for his intercessory powers. Catholics believe that by praying to him, he can intercede for them to be protected them from harm on their journeys. Some also believe that St. Christopher can intercede on behalf of those who are suffering from toothache or other ailments.

St. Christopher

Despite his popularity among Catholics, the Catholic Church officially removed St. Christopher from the liturgical calendar in 1969 due to concerns about his historical existence. However, devotion to him continues to this day, many churches still bear his namesake, and many Catholics still pray to him and wear St. Christopher medals as a symbol of his protection and guidance.

The story of St. Christopher is a fascinating and inspiring tale of a man who dedicated his life to serving others and carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

His devotion to Christ and his role as the patron saint of travelers have made him a beloved figure in the Catholic faith, and his legacy continues to live on through the wearing of St. Christopher medals and the prayers of the faithful.

Saint ChristopherPrayer to St. Christopher

Grant me, O Lord, a steady hand and watchful eye.

That no one shall be hurt as I pass by.

You gave life, I pray no act of mine may take away or mar that gift of thine.

Shelter those, dear Lord, who bear my company, from the evils of fire and all calamity.

Teach me, to use my car for others need;

Nor miss through love of undue speed The beauty of the world; that thus I may with joy and courtesy go on my way.

St. Christopher, holy patron of travelers, protect me and lead me safely to my destiny.
