St. Gemma Galgani, an Italian mystic, had numerous encounters with her guardian angel, who would often comfort and guide her during times of spiritual trials. In 1916, a year before the famous apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Fatima, Portugal, three shepherd children—Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco—witnessed an angel who identified himself as the Angel of Peace. The angel taught the children prayers and urged them to make sacrifices for the reparation of sins. This encounter with the Angel of Peace prepared the children for the later apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, emphasizing the importance of prayer, penance, and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
