Encounters with angels in Catholic history

Angel

Angels hold a special place in the Catholic Church’s teachings and traditions. These celestial beings act as messengers, protectors, and intermediaries between God and humanity. Their presence can be found throughout the Bible, as well as in miracles and the lives of saints.

Let’s explore the Church’s perspective on angels and delve into some historical encounters involving these heavenly beings.

The Church’s View on Angels

The Catholic Church teaches that angels are pure spiritual beings created by God to serve Him and carry out His will. They possess intelligence and free will but are not bound by time or space. Angels are often depicted as winged beings, but their true nature transcends physical form.

Angel

The Church recognizes nine choirs of angels:

  • Seraphim
  • Cherubim
  • Thrones
  • Dominions
  • Virtues
  • Powers
  • Principalities
  • Archangels
  • Angels

Each choir has a unique role in the divine plan, but all serve as messengers and guardians to humanity. The encounters mentioned below illustrate the various ways angels have interacted with humanity throughout history, providing guidance, comfort, and protection.

AngelThe Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38)

In one of the most significant angelic encounters in the Bible, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and announced the coming birth of Jesus. Gabriel’s message to Mary revealed that she would conceive by the Holy Spirit and give birth to the Son of God. This event, known as the Annunciation, is celebrated on March 25th in the Catholic Church.

Jacob’s Ladder (Genesis 28:10-19)

In the Old Testament, Jacob experienced a vision of angels ascending and descending a ladder connecting heaven and earth. This encounter symbolizes the connection between God and humanity, as well as the role of angels as intermediaries. Jacob awoke from his vision and declared the place as “the house of God” and “the gate of heaven.”

AngelSt. Peter’s Liberation from Prison (Acts 12:5-10)

An angel played a significant role in the miraculous release of St. Peter from prison. While Peter was held captive by King Herod, an angel appeared and guided him out of his cell, past the guards, and through the prison gates. This miraculous escape highlights the protective and intercessory role of angels in the lives of the faithful.

The Angel and St. John Bosco

St. John Bosco, an Italian priest and educator, experienced several encounters with a guardian angel throughout his life. The angel, known as Grigio, appeared as a large grey dog that protected St. John from various dangers. Grigio would often appear suddenly and disappear just as quickly after ensuring St. John’s safety, demonstrating the watchful and protective nature of guardian angels.

The Miracle of the Angels and St. Gemma Galgani

St. Gemma Galgani, an Italian mystic, had numerous encounters with her guardian angel, who would often comfort and guide her during times of spiritual trials. In one instance, when St. Gemma was unable to attend Mass due to illness, her guardian angel brought her Holy Communion, showcasing the heavenly beings’ ability to provide spiritual nourishment and support.

Our Lady of Fatima and the Angel of Peace

In 1916, a year before the famous apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Fatima, Portugal, three shepherd children—Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco—witnessed an angel who identified himself as the Angel of Peace. The angel taught the children prayers and urged them to make sacrifices for the reparation of sins. This encounter with the Angel of Peace prepared the children for the later apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, emphasizing the importance of prayer, penance, and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
