Celebrating the Saints: Feast Days on July 5th

St. Cyril

As Catholic faithful, while we navigate through our daily routines, we also pause to commemorate the lives of saints whose feast days enrich our liturgical calendar. July 5th is one such day, offering us multiple celebrations of saints whose lives illuminate the path to Christ.

Here are the saints that the Catholic Church venerates on July 5th, each with a brief background to appreciate their spiritual journeys.

  1. Saint Anthony Mary Zaccaria (1502 – 1539): An Italian saint, Anthony Mary Zaccaria was a physician before becoming a priest. He co-founded the Barnabites, a religious order devoted to helping the sick and educating the clergy. His life was a testament to devotion and service, leaving a profound impact on the reform of the Catholic Church.
  2. Saint Zoe of Rome (died c. 286): A noblewoman married to a Roman court official, Zoe was known for her piety and faith. Unable to speak for six years, she was miraculously healed after a vision of Saint Peter. Later martyred under Emperor Diocletian, she stands as a witness to faith in times of persecution.
  3. Saint Vincentia Gerosa (1784 – 1847): An Italian nun, Vincentia co-founded the Sisters of Charity of Lovere with Saint Bartolomea Capitanio. After a life dedicated to education and care for the poor, she was canonized in 1950 by Pope Pius XII. Her legacy continues today through the Sisters of Charity’s work around the world.
  4. St. Cyril

    Saint Cyril of Alexandria

Saint Cyril of Alexandria (376 – 444): A leading figure in the early Church, Cyril served as the Patriarch of Alexandria. Known for his role in the Council of Ephesus, which affirmed Mary as the Mother of God, Cyril’s writings on Christology and the Trinity significantly contributed to Christian theology.

  5. Blessed Manuel Ruiz and Companions (19th century): Blessed Manuel Ruiz, a Franciscan friar, and his companions were martyred in Damascus, Syria, during a wave of anti-Christian violence. They are revered for their courage in defending their faith despite the threat of death.
  6. Saint Modwenna (7th Century): An Irish hermitess and abbess, Modwenna is linked with Burton-on-Trent in England where she is said to have founded an abbey. Her life is shrouded in myth, but she is often invoked for her healing powers.

On this day, July 5th, we honor these holy men and women. They each, in their unique way, witnessed to the Gospel, living lives of faith, charity, and courage. Let us remember them, learn from their examples, and strive to emulate their faithfulness in our own lives. Happy feast day to these remarkable saints!
