The Sisters of Carmel is a convent of cloistered, contemplative Carmelite nuns. Their Carmelite life of prayer and sacrifice for God and neighbor depends on the charity of others. The day is long and hard and busy for the Carmelite nun. From the time she rises in the morning to chant the praises of God until she retires to her austere little cell at night, she is striving to make herself more pleasing to God, and so, more valuable to others. Though she spends those many hours before the Blessed Sacrament, her prayers do not end in the chapel. ABOUT THE SCAPULAR. - In the year 1251, in the town of Aylesford in England, Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite. She handed him a brown woolen scapular and said, “This shall be a privilege for you and all Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall not suffer eternal fire.” In time, the Church extended this magnificent privilege to all the laity who are willing to be invested in the Brown Scapular of the Carmelites and who perpetually wear it.
