Description

A short biography of the Saint who reformed Carmelites and gave a host of Saints to the Church. She helped bring back the original strict observance of the Carmelite rule, founded numerous new convents, became a celebrated mystic, and was canonized only 40 years after her death. In 1970 she was declared a Doctor of the Church. Here is a popular biography for young and old of this spirited and colorful Saint .

Mother Frances Alice Monica Forbes, also known as F.A. Forbes, was born in 1869 into a Presbyterian family. She converted to Catholicism in 1900, and entered the Society of the Sacred Heart as a postulant when she was thirty-one. She was a strong-willed and intelligent woman, and used both these gifts to generously make the sacrifices that the Lord wished of her daily. F.A. Forbes authored a considerable amount of books based on the saints, including St. John Bosco: Friend of Youth, St. Monica, St. Catherine of Sienna, St. Benedict, and The Gripfast Series of English Readers. She died in 1936.

  • Medjugorje - The First Seven Days by Darko Pavicic

Medjugorje: The First Seven Days by journalist Darko Pavičić is a detailed and impartial journalistic-investigative reconstruction through previously unpublished materials and witnesses interviews sheds light on the occurrences of the first days of Medjugorje apparitions from June 24th to July 3rd, 1981, whose authenticity the Vatican considers positive. Medjugorje, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is the only place in the world where the Virgin Mary appears every day. These apparitions have continued for 41 years and today Medjugorje is governed by the Vatican through a special papal envoy. Medjugorje: The First Seven Days was inspired by the unofficial findings of the International Commission of Inquiry of the Holy See for Medjugorje, which Pope Benedict XVI entrusted to Cardinal Camillo Ruini and which gave a positive opinion on the authenticity of these "first seven days", i. E. the ten days of apparitions from June 24th to July 3rd, 1981. The book is an ideal introduction to the phenomenon for skeptics and those who encounter the Medjugorje phenomenon for the first time, while it also contains a handful of previously unpublished details which are unknown even to devotees of Medjugorje. 370 pages. • The Secret of Mary

A short, famous classic on "true devotion to Mary"--an excellent, easy means of attaining holiness and salvation, a way followed by Popes and Saints, but also perfect for lay people. It is at least every bit as good as his True Devotion to Mary! Small but powerful--seems almost divinely inspired! The author of The Secret of the Rosary and the originator of total consecration to Mary, St. Louis-Marie Grignion De Montfort (1673-1716) remains one of the greatest apostles of Marian devotion the world has ever known. As a young priest, De Montfort dedicated himself to preaching to the people. This highly gifted orator's language was simple but full of divine love, much as you will find in True Devotion to Mary. De Montfort's whole life was marked by constant prayer, love for the poor and holy joy in humiliations and persecutions. De Montfort was canonized by Pius XII in 1947. Dimensions: 3.75" X 6" X 0.25"

  • Dear Children - The Queen of Peace Visits Medjugorje

Life was simple in Medjugorje… People lived like they had for hundreds of years—growing crops, raising livestock, and spending time with family and friends. Heaven, though, had other plans, and the village changed forever after a group of children saw an extraordinary sight on a nearby hillside one summer afternoon. Throughout history, people in different parts of the world have been visited by Mary, the mother of Jesus. Still, no one expected her to visit Medjugorje, least of all the six children who would come to be known as “the visionaries.” As they would soon find out, her heavenly visits would transform their sleepy hamlet into a destination of hope and peace for people from every part of the world. Mary’s messages begin with the words “Dear Children,” and she wishes for every person in the world to see her as a mother. This is the true story of Medjugorje and the Queen of Peace. 2-FOR-1 DEAL: Buy one English version, get the Croatian version free! • Fatima for Today by Apostoli

Though the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima took place almost a hundred years ago, Our Lady's call to prayer and penance for the salvation of souls and peace in the world is as relevant now as when first delivered to three Portuguese peasant children in 1917. At the peak of the First World War, Our Lady warned of another worldwide conflict, the rise and spread of Communism, and a terrible persecution of the Church unless people repented of their sins and returned to God. She also requested devotion to her Immaculate Heart and a special consecration of Russia. Much of what Our Lady of Fatima said was revealed soon after her appearances, but the third and final "secret", which was not a message but a prophetic vision seen by the children, was not unveiled by the Vatican until 2000. Pope John Paul II, who read the third secret while recovering from the attempt upon his life in 1981, believed the vision signified the sufferings the Church had endured in the twentieth century. Because of the prophetic nature of her messages, Our Lady of Fatima has been the subject of much controversy and speculation. In this book, Father Andrew Apostoli carefully analyzes the events that took place in Fatima and clears up lingering questions and doubts about their meaning. He also challenges the reader to hear anew the call of Our Lady to prayer and sacrifice, for the world is ever in need of generous hearts willing to make reparation for those in danger of losing their way to God. 310 pages.

  • My Heart Will Triumph by Mirjana Soldo

Mirjana Soldo was only 16 years old when she and five other children saw a mysterious young woman on a remote hillside in the village of Medjugorje, then part of Yugoslavia. The woman—who possessed a beauty and grace that seemed to come from beyond—identified herself as the Virgin Mary. The apparitions that began on the afternoon of June 24, 1981 would dramatically change Mirjana’s life and the lives of countless people around the world. Her claims, however, contradicted the atheistic ideologies of the Communist government and Mirjana was deemed “an enemy of the state.” Amazingly, the apparitions have continued for over 35 years. Millions of people travel to Medjugorje every year in search of answers to life’s biggest questions. The messages given by Mary are a call for mankind to return to God. And, according to Mirjana, the Virgin entrusted her with ten secrets that foretell the future of the world—secrets that she will reveal within her lifetime. Paperback. 369 pages. A portion of every book sold goes to Mary's Meals, a charity which feeds over a million children every day. SPECIAL OFFER: Every copy of My Heart Will Triumph ordered here on CatholicShop. • Jesus of Nazareth - Softcover by Benedict XVI

In this bold, momentous work, the pope—in his first book written as Benedict XVI—seeks to salvage the person of Jesus from recent “popular” depictions and to restore Jesus’ true identity as discovered in the Gospels. Through his brilliance as a theologian and his personal conviction as a believer, the pope shares a rich, compelling, flesh-and-blood portrait of Jesus and incites us to encounter, face-to-face, the central figure of the Christian faith. From Jesus of Nazareth… “the great question that will be with us throughout this entire book: But what has Jesus really brought, then, if he has not brought world peace, universal prosperity, and a better world? What has he brought? The answer is very simple: God. He has brought God! He has brought the God who once gradually unveiled his countenance first to Abraham, then to Moses and the prophets, and then in the wisdom literature—the God who showed his face only in Israel, even though he was also honored among the pagans in various shadowy guises. It is this God, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, the true God, whom he has brought to the peoples of the earth. He has brought God, and now we know his face, now we can call upon him. Now we know the path that we human beings have to take in this world. Jesus has brought God and with God the truth about where we are going and where we come from: faith, hope, and love.”

  • Hungry Souls

After a week of hearing ghostly noises, a man is visited in his home by the spirit of his mother, dead for three decades. She reproaches him for his dissolute life and begs him to have Masses said in her name. Then she lays her hand on his sleeve, leaving an indelible burn mark, and departs... A Lutheran minister, no believer in Purgatory, is the puzzled recipient of repeated visitations from "demons" who come to him seeking prayer, consolation, and refuge in his little German church. But pity for the poor spirits overcomes the man's skepticism, and he marvels at what kind of departed souls could belong to Christ and yet suffer still... Hungry Souls recounts these stories and many others trustworthy, Church-verified accounts of earthly visitations from the dead in Purgatory. Accompanying these accounts are images from the "Museum of Purgatory" in Rome, which contains relics of encounters with the Holy Souls, including numerous evidences of hand prints burned into clothing and books; burn marks that cannot be explained by natural means or duplicated by artificial ones.

  • The Way of Humility by Jorge Mario Cardinal Bergoglio (Pope Francis)

Originally a series written by Pope Francis while he was Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires, these profound meditations give an inspiring introduction to the path of humility and love needed to form true Christian communities. They are divided into two separate works, Corruption and Sin, and Self-Accusation. As the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Pope Francis ministered in a country that suffered greatly from the effects of corruption in public and private life. In these texts, the current Holy Father reflects on the connection between sin and corruption in the life of every Christian and how pride and self-sufficiency lead from one to the other. The roots of many of the themes of his pontificate can be found in these texts on humility, honesty and simplicity. The two pieces are on different but related issues. The difference between sin and corruption and the remedy for sin, which is self-accusation, meaning telling oneself the truth about one's faults. In short, pride is the problem; humility is the solution. The Pope states: "It will do us good to reflect together on the problem of corruption and also on its relationship with sin. It will do us good to shake up our souls with the prophetic force of the Gospel, which places us in the truth about things by stirring up the layers of fallen dead leaves of human weakness and complicity that can create the conditions for corruption. It will do us a lot of good, in the light of God's word, to learn to discern the different states of corruption that surround us and threaten to lead us astray. It will do us good to say to one another again, "Yes, I'm a sinner; but no, I'm not corrupt!"-and to say it with fear, lest we accept the state of corruption as just another sin." 105 pages. Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pope Francis) is the first Latin American to be elected to the chair of Peter. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, he served as head of the Society of Jesus in Argentina, then became the archbishop of Buenos Aires, and was elected to be the Pope in March, 2013.

  • The Angry Christian

A needed antidote for our culture of anger. As both mainstream and Christian culture become more polarized and terms like “age of anger” become commonplace, The Angry Christian meets a desperate need. Not self-help or psychology, this book looks first and foremost at the Bible for answers to the problems of anger. The Bible’s answer? Christians can be good and be angry at the same time. This is possible, and spiritually healthy, if you allow the Holy Spirit to strengthen you to get angry for the right reasons, and keep your anger under control. Ghezzi also shows you how to: Use anger constructively Use scripture to discipline anger Let anger help you overcome obstacles “The Angry Christian draws from scripture, life in the Holy Spirit, and the virtues to fashion a response to anger that can become a moment of grace and holiness.” —His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington “Whether anger is ally or adversary, righteous or right-filled depends upon its when, where, and why. Ghezzi masterfully reveals anger in all its faces, teaching how to harness it for maximum Christian good.” —Dr. Ray Guarendi, clinical psychologist and author of Fighting Mad “Anger is the mental virus of our age. It's an infection that becomes a poison that becomes an addiction, both bitter and delicious. Unless it's curbed, the habitual taste for conflict can break apart communities and families, and eat away every trace of our inner peace. In The Angry Christian, Bert Ghezzi explains the roots and nature of this emotional slavery with exceptional skill. Even more importantly, he shows us how we can be free of it." —Charles J. Chaput, O. F. M. Cap., Archbishop of Philadelphia “Bert Ghezzi is publishing an extremely important book for this particular time. Not only are a lot of people angrily reacting against other people and institutions in our society, but they evoke counter-reactions in ever more volatile forms. Bert addresses the reality of anger in human life, its usefulness and its need for control in practical ways that Christians can apply to themselves. This is a book which one can bring to prayer for meditation and from which one can gain much wisdom in a foolishly angry world.” —Fr. Mitch Pacwa, SJ, EWTN TV and Radio Host "In these tumultuous times, many of us see something that makes us angry almost every time we log on to our computers. Bert has provided a much-needed resource that helps us understand how to channel those intense feelings into making the world a better place." —Jennifer Fulwiler, SiriusXM Radio Host and author of One Beautiful Dream "We’re taught in church to avoid our anger and the pain that goes with it, but in an era of political, social and religious anger, how do we channel it for good? As Ghezzi suggests in his book, anger can be a slow and steady work toward justice, and a useful tool for the hearts of Christians, if we keep it in check and understand how it works. This book is for the average human who struggles to know themselves and others better in all the emotions that come with relationship, and a guide to help us become more whole along the way." —Kaitlin Curtice, author of Glory Happening
