The Vintage White Bronze St. George and the Dragon Shell Medal is cut in the shape of a scallop, its ribs radiating outward, and set into that fluted field is a rider on a rearing horse driving his lance down into the dragon coiled beneath the hooves. The modeling is bold and a little rough, so horse and rider stand well clear of the ribbed ground even at this small size.
The mounted lancer over a dragon is the long-established image of St. George, patron of soldiers, of those who ride, and of anyone contending with something larger than themselves. Setting him inside a pilgrim's scallop is an unusual and rather beautiful touch, and it belongs to the folk devotional metalwork of the Americas; the original is Argentine. Nothing on the piece is lettered, and none is needed.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
