Product Details

The St. Teresa of Avila medal shows the saint half-length in the heavy habit and veil of a Carmelite, turned slightly aside with her hands drawn in and an open book lying beside her. Around the upper rim, over a rough granulated ground, runs the legend SANCTA TERESA, Latin for Saint Teresa.

Teresa entered the Carmel at Avila in 1535 and spent the rest of her life reforming it, founding house after house across Spain against considerable opposition, travelling in carts over bad roads well into old age. The open book belongs to her as surely as the habit does: the Interior Castle and the Life she wrote under obedience are among the plainest and most practical accounts of prayer ever set down, and they earned her the title of Doctor of the Church, the first woman ever named one. The heavy hand-cut lettering and granular field of the original belong to the Spanish devotional workshops that kept her memory closest.

The St. Teresa of Avila medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
