The Vintage Bronze Our Lady of the Pillar Medal shows the small crowned Virgin and Child standing on their column, robed in a stiff triangular mantle and set within a rayed halo, framed by leafy sprays. The reverse carries three shallow lines of lettering: RECUERDO DEL PILAR, souvenir of the Pillar.
The pillar stands at Zaragoza in Spain, where tradition holds that Our Lady came to the apostle James while she was still living, the oldest Marian apparition claimed anywhere, and left behind the column on which her image has stood ever since. She is patroness of Spain and of the Spanish-speaking world, and this is the medal pilgrims carried home from her basilica on the Ebro. The stiff cone of the mantle is how the little statue itself is dressed for her feast.
