The Vintage White Bronze Philippine Lilies Openwork Crucifix is almost entirely opened out. Each arm encloses a wide lobed opening, and within each opening a lily unfurls, so the corpus appears to hang in a frame of flowers. A further spray rises from the foot, and a small plain titulus sits above the head.
The pattern comes from the Philippines, where the devotional metalwork brought by Spanish missions was taken up by local silversmiths and worked for centuries in their own hands, which is why a Filipino crucifix carries so much more flower and air than its Spanish parent. The lily belongs to the Virgin and to the promise of the Resurrection, so a cross grown over with lilies says what Easter says. This is one of the larger crucifixes in the group, yet the piercing keeps it light in the hand.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
