Each face of this white bronze plaque medal is treated as a small relief picture. The front is the grotto: the Virgin standing with her hands joined in the rock niche above, a girl kneeling at prayer among the stones below, the rocky overhang worked in deep, broken shadow across the top. The reverse carries a second scene, a robed figure standing above a kneeling woman and child.
Cast in a band across the foot are the words the Virgin gave when Bernadette finally asked her name: JE SUIS L'IMMACULEE CONCEPTION, I am the Immaculate Conception. The girl was fourteen, did not understand the phrase, and repeated it the whole way home rather than lose it. The white finish suits the subject, and the depth of the relief lets both scenes read clearly at this size.
The plaque medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
