The Wounds of the Passion set is frank folk work: one oval medal and five small oval links, all cast in rough, hand-cut relief on a grainy ground that holds the antiquing. The medal shows an open hand raised palm outward, the pierced hand of the crucified Christ, on one face, and a pair of long nails crossed at their heads on the other. The five links repeat the instruments of the Passion in the same plain hand.
Nothing is lettered on any of the pieces; the wounds and the nails carry the whole meaning by themselves, as they have done in the country devotion of southeastern Europe for centuries, the originals here being Bulgarian. Meditating on the Five Wounds is among the oldest ways of praying the Passion, older than most of the written prayers that came after it, and this little group says it without a single word.
The medal and links were faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves their vintage character.
