The Vintage Bronze Tulip Crucifix is worked all over in fine vertical grain, so that the metal reads as sawn wood, and out of that wood grow flowers: a small tulip-like bloom on each pointed arm end, another opening at the foot of the shaft, and a flared canopy spreading above the corpus. The figure itself is slight and quiet against all that texture.
Flowering crosses belong to a long folk tradition in which the wood of the Cross buds into life, the dead tree of an execution turned into the tree of the garden and the instrument of death made the sign of resurrection. Nothing is lettered on the piece; the meaning is carried entirely by the modelling, and the antiqued finish settles into the grain and leaves the blossoms bright.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
