The Vintage Bronze St. Junípero Serra Medal stands the friar upright in his Franciscan habit, one hand raised and a tall processional cross braced in the other, small against an open field within a plain raised border. He is the Mallorcan Franciscan who walked El Camino Real and founded the first of the Alta California missions.
The reverse is lettered with the words most often remembered as his: ALWAYS GO FORWARD AND NEVER TURN BACK, set beneath a small crucifix, with his signature cast in facsimile across the foot. Few medals carry a saint's own hand this way. Read devotionally it is a line about perseverance, the refusal to look back that the Gospel asks of anyone who has set a hand to the plough, and it suits anyone with a long road in front of them.
