This small medal carries two devotions, one to a face. The front holds the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the crowned and veiled Virgin holding the Child, who grips her hand and turns to look up, while two small angels hover above with the cross and the lance. The back shows a haloed young religious with his arms crossed on his breast, a small cross at his shoulder and a skull resting on the table beside him.
The legend around him reads SANCTE GERARDE MAELLA ORA PRO NOBIS, Saint Gerard Majella pray for us, the surname cast in the older spelling. Gerard was a Redemptorist lay brother, a wonderworker in his own lifetime and now the patron mothers turn to in pregnancy; the Redemptorists have been custodians of the Perpetual Help icon since 1866, which is why the two are set back to back here.
The St. Gerard Majella medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
