The Vintage Bronze St. Cecilia Medal with Songbird holds a young woman in profile with a finely hatched rayed halo behind her head, her hands lifted toward a bank of tall organ pipes at the right of the field. The reverse carries a songbird perched on a branch among leaves, modelled in the same soft, low relief.
The organ and the raised hands identify St. Cecilia, the Roman martyr who is patroness of musicians, singers and church music, and the bird belongs to the same thought. Tradition remembers that on her wedding day, while the instruments played, she sang in her heart to God alone, and choirs and choir schools have carried her name ever since. The design has no lettering at all, which is part of its appeal; it reads as a small art medal rather than a plaque of words, and it sits easily at the throat.
