The Vintage Bronze St. Anne Teaching the Virgin is an openwork medal built around a lesson. St. Anne sits with a book before a small standing girl who faces her, the two set beneath a canopy of lilies crowned by a cross, with beaded scrollwork framing the scene and a banner across the base lettered Ste ANNE, Saint Anne.
The child at her knee is the Virgin, and this is the scene that gave St. Anne her place as patroness of mothers, grandmothers and teachers: the mother of Mary teaching her daughter to read the scriptures her Son would one day fulfil. Medals in this form were carried home from her great shrines at Sainte-Anne-d'Auray in Brittany and Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre in Quebec, and the pierced work keeps a generous piece feeling light.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique French original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
