The Vintage Bronze St. Agatha of Catania Medal shows what the people of Catania actually see each February: her crowned reliquary bust lifted on its tiered float, flanked by angels with palms and hung with lamps, exactly as it is carried through the city at her feast. The legend reads S. AGATA V. M. CATANESE — Saint Agatha, Virgin and Martyr, of Catania.
The reverse turns to the Sacred Heart, the Lord shown with the flaming heart at his breast within a laurel border and the words COR JESU VITA ET RESURRECTIO NOSTRA, Heart of Jesus, our life and our resurrection. Agatha was martyred in Catania in the third century and has long been invoked by women facing breast cancer, and medals of this kind were bought at the feast and worn for years afterward. Set beside the promise of resurrection, the martyr's float reads as what it is, a city carrying its own hope through the streets.
