The whole cross here has been given a texture — arms and shaft worked over with a close leafy, feathered grain — so that the smooth figure of Christ stands clear against it. Behind his head and shoulders a broad fan of rays opens out, and across that fan runs an arched banner.
The banner reads INRI, the Latin abbreviation of Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. Pilate ordered the charge fixed above the cross in Hebrew, Greek and Latin, and when the chief priests asked him to change the wording he answered that what he had written, he had written. What was meant as mockery the Church has kept as a title of honor, and setting it against a sunburst says so without argument: the instrument of death read as the sign of a reign.
The rayed crucifix with INRI banner was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
