The Vintage Bronze Our Lady of the Road Button shows a veiled Madonna with a broad halo bending a little toward the haloed Child at her side, his hands raised together and holding something small. Both are cast half length against a stippled ground, with N-DAME DE LA ROUTE curving around the upper rim.
The French is short for Notre-Dame de la Route, Our Lady of the Road. She is invoked by travellers — drivers, pilgrims, anyone setting out — and pieces under this title were carried on French roads all through the last century, at the start of a journey and again at the end of it. The tenderness of the pose is the point: the mother turning toward her child is what the traveller is asked to keep in mind, and to come home to.
