The Vintage Bronze Our Lady of Solitude and St. Francis of Paola medal is worked on both faces of a small cut octagon. One shows the Virgin standing alone on a low altar step, veiled and heavily mantled, her hands joined and a rayed halo pricked with stars behind her, lettered N·S· DE LA SOLEDAD. The other gives a bearded friar in a hooded habit with a staff, lettered S· FRANC· DE PAVLA.
Our Lady of Solitude is the Mother left alone between the burial of her Son and the morning of the Resurrection, a Spanish devotion for anyone keeping vigil in grief. Francis of Paola, the hermit who founded the Minims and took humility as his rule, keeps her company here. The pairing and the cut octagonal form belong to the devotional medals carried through the Spanish colonies in the eighteenth century; the antique original for this piece was found on a Florida beach.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
