The Vintage Bronze Openwork Crowned Virgin Medal with Angel stands nearly two inches tall and is cut through almost everywhere except the figure it frames. A crowned Virgin stands at the center in a wide bell-shaped robe covered in fine incised pattern, rays breaking from behind her head, and a small winged figure supports the base beneath her feet. Around her the frame is pierced into leaves, flowers and scrolls beneath an arched crest.
The crowned and rayed Virgin lifted by an angel is a composition found across the devotional metalwork of Mexico and Latin America, where Our Lady is shown robed in light and carried above the world she prays for. Openwork on this scale was the silversmith's way of making a large medal light enough to be worn all day, and every pierced edge shows the hand that finished it.
This medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
