Look at this crucifix a second time and another figure emerges from what first reads as a plain cross. A robed form stands behind the corpus, its own arms running out along the crossbar, so that two hands appear at each arm end, one above the other, and a second nimbed head rises above the head of Christ. The upright is otherwise left almost bare, which makes that discovery the whole design.
The arrangement is the Throne of Mercy, one of the oldest ways of showing the Trinity at the cross: God the Father stands behind and upholds the crucified Son. It teaches something the eye can find on its own, that the Father is not absent from Calvary but holding it, and that the Son does not suffer alone. Few crucifixes carry that much theology in so little metal, and fewer still ask you to look twice before you find it.
