The Vintage Bronze Eastern European Crucifix is densely worked on both faces. The front sets the corpus against a cross with a rope-twist edge, INRI in a disc above the head and a rosette at the foot. The reverse fills every inch: the Virgin stands full length with the Christ Child held in a round medallion at her breast, a roundel of winged figures on each arm and one more at the foot.
INRI stands for Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the charge fixed above the cross. The arrangement on the reverse, with the Child shown in a medallion rather than in her arms, is the Byzantine type called the Virgin of the Sign, drawn from Isaiah's promise that a virgin shall conceive: Christ is shown within her, before he is born. The flattened, frontal handling belongs to Eastern European work, and a great deal of it is carried in a very small compass.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
