Two crossbars, the shorter set above the longer, and every arm finished with a small trefoil and bud: this is the Cross of Lorraine, carried through eastern France for centuries as the emblem of the duchy and of its saints. Growing across the face of it is a thistle, its stem rising from the foot and its spined leaves and flower head opening over the crossing.
The double bar is the old patriarchal form, first used for crosses that enshrined a relic of the True Cross, and Lorraine took it as its own. The thistle is the badge of Nancy and of the province, chosen for the motto that goes with it: no one touches it without being pricked. Together they make a piece of local devotion as much as a religious one, worn by people who wanted to say where they came from and what they believed in the same gesture. The antiqued finish sits down into the ground and leaves the thistle standing bright.
