The Vintage Bronze Colonial Latin American Child's Crucifix is slender and light in the hand. The corpus hangs beneath a titulus lettered INRI, with a burst of rays worked behind the head, and the arms end in flared terminals studded with small round bosses. At the foot of the shaft, cast in low relief, is a skull with crossed bones.
That skull is not decoration. It is Adam's skull, which by old tradition lay buried at Golgotha, the place of the skull, so that the blood of the crucifixion fell on the grave of the first man and the second Adam redeemed the first. Colonial Spanish American workshops used the motif constantly, together with the rayed head. The titulus reads Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an eighteenth-century antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
