The Old Roma Crucifix is fully worked in the older Roman taste. Foliate scrolls fill the flaring arm terminals, a crest of pierced leafwork rises above the crossbar, and the foot spreads into a wide scrolled base, so the cross is framed with ornament on every side. The corpus is long and finely modelled, the head fallen forward, the loincloth knotted at the hip.
This is the manner of the crucifixes that came out of the Roman workshops clustered around the great pilgrim basilicas, richly ornamented, made to be carried home from the city and kept for a lifetime. White bronze takes the antiquing differently from yellow, holding a cooler and more silvery tone in the recesses, which suits so much scrollwork. At 1 3/4 inches it makes a substantial end for a full rosary.
The Old Roma crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
