The Vintage White Bronze Gothic Crucifix closes each of its four arms in a quatrefoil terminal, pierced at the centre with small beads set at the points. The corpus is modelled in the round against the slender shaft, the head fallen to one shoulder, and a plain plaque sits above it. Everything else is left to the architecture of the cross.
The form follows the quatrefoil-ended crosses of medieval metalwork, where the four lobes were read as the four evangelists and the four corners of the earth reached by the Cross. The antiqued finish suits that architecture: the recesses of the flower terminals hold the darkness while the raised edges and the figure are rubbed bright by hand. At 2-1/4 inches the figure carries real presence, and the white bronze keeps a cool, silvery tone.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
