The Ave Maria Monogram Center is made entirely of letters, though it takes a moment to see them. Two long scrolled volutes curve out to either side, a ribbed crest rises at the top, and the strapwork between them interlaces into an A and an M woven together, the old monogram for Ave Maria. Cast rather than engraved, the letters keep the thickness and irregularity of hand-modelled wax.
The original is Philippine, from the long tradition of silver and bronze rosary work in the islands, where the interlaced AM was a favorite way of naming Our Lady without picturing her. Ave Maria, Hail Mary, are the words the beads themselves count out, so a center formed from those two initials states the whole purpose of the rosary in a single shape. It suits a plainer set of beads or a man's rosary particularly well.
The Ave Maria center was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
