The Vintage Sterling Silver French Rosary Center with Crucifix is half an inch of French devotional design: a plain Latin cross rising between a pair of scrolled volutes, acanthus curling outward at the shoulders and a shell spreading at the base. The cross itself is left unornamented, so it stands clear of all the scrollwork around it.
The vocabulary is eighteenth-century French — the double volute, the shell, the acanthus — carried down into nineteenth-century rosary work and reduced until it would sit between two beads without crowding them. There is no lettering on the piece. Sterling suits it particularly well, since the darkened recesses of the piercing throw the bright silver of the cross forward. It belongs on a rosary strung in an older style, where a stamped modern center would look out of place.
The rosary center was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
