The Teardrop Crucifix is built from a single shape repeated. Each arm closes in a teardrop lobe with a pierced drop at its center, the foot opens into a larger teardrop still, and the piercings let light through so the cross reads as line rather than mass. The corpus is small and finely modelled, the head fallen to one side.
The tear is an old and deliberate figure in devotional metalwork: the sorrow of the Passion and the compassion of those who kept watch beneath the cross, worked into the outline of the thing itself. A design like this asks to be looked at slowly, since the same form appears at five different scales and the eye keeps finding it again. Because so much of the field is open, the piece stays light for its size and keeps its delicacy.
The teardrop crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
