The Vintage Bronze Madonna Rosary Center with Lace Frame holds a small and very still portrait at its middle: the Virgin in profile, veiled, facing left with her eyes lowered, modeled in soft relief inside a sunken oval. Everything around her is movement. The frame spreads outward in pierced scrolls, curling tendrils and fleur-de-lis points, worked so finely that it reads as lace, and it takes up more of the piece than the portrait does.
That contrast is the design, and it is a familiar one in nineteenth-century French and Italian devotional metal, where a plain Madonna was often given a frame like ironwork or lace. The ornament busy, the face at rest: it is roughly what praying the Rosary feels like on a good day. There is no lettering. At an inch and three-eighths it makes a generous center for a full-length rosary.
