The Madonna and Child Lace-Edge rosary center is built around one of the tenderest images in Christian art: mother and child pressed cheek to cheek, her veiled and crowned head bent toward his, her arm gathering him in. The relief is deep and softly worn, and a pierced border of small arches and scrolls gives the piece its lace-like edge.
The image belongs to the long tradition of the Virgin of Tenderness, where the whole meaning is carried by two faces touching and nothing needs to be written. It is Mary as any mother would be, and the Child as any child, and the theology follows quietly behind: the Word made flesh, small enough to be held. Set at the place where the decades of a rosary meet, it puts that image in the hand of whoever prays it, over and over, all the way round.
