The Vintage Bronze Joan of Arc Art Nouveau Rosary Center is French work in the full Art Nouveau taste, its frame a set of long whiplash curves and pierced openings that spread out like wings from the middle. Set into that middle, on both faces, is a small round medallion of a young woman in profile, her hair loose and long, a breastplate across her shoulders, with a legend running around the rim.
The legend reads JEANNE D'ARC, Joan of Arc, the farm girl of Domremy who heard her voices, led an army at seventeen and was burned at nineteen. Her cult ran high in France in exactly the years this style flourished, between her beatification in 1909 and her canonization in 1920, and pieces like this were made for a country that had taken her back as its own. She is the patron of soldiers, and of anyone asked to stand alone.
