The Vintage Bronze Christ Bearing the Cross Rosary Center holds a small round medallion at its heart: a bowed figure carrying a cross over one shoulder, Christ on the road to Calvary. Around that scene the ground opens into banks of petal shapes and beaded scrolls, with a band of fine lattice running across the middle and a small cross rising from the crest.
This is the scene the faithful walk through in the Stations of the Cross and pray in the fourth Sorrowful Mystery, the weight taken up willingly and carried the whole length of the road. Set at the join of a rosary it sits under the thumb at the beginning of every set of decades, a reminder of what the beads are counting. The relief is small and quietly modelled, so it rewards a close look, and the antiquing settles into the openwork to give the whole center its depth.
