The Vintage Bronze Art Deco Madonna Rosary Center reduces Our Lady to her essentials: a veiled head in profile, facing right, eyes lowered, cut into an octagonal panel. Around her the frame steps outward in flat chamfered planes with squared shoulders, the geometry doing all the work that scrollwork would have done a generation earlier. At five-eighths of an inch it is a modest piece, and the profile is unmistakable.
The stepped framing belongs to the Art Deco manner of the 1920s and 1930s, when devotional metalwork took up the same clean lines then appearing in architecture and jewelry. Stripping an image back that far asks something of the person praying: with no ornament to rest on, the lowered eyes and the bowed veil carry the entire meditation. There is no lettering on the piece. It suits a rosary that wants a quiet center, and anyone who likes devotional things plain-spoken.
