The Grand Baroque Crucifix is the largest and most ornamented cross in this collection. Every arm breaks into pierced acanthus leaf with a fleur-de-lis set at its heart, and a small crown-like crest rises above the titulus. Against all that movement the corpus is kept quiet, the head fallen to the right, the body long and lightly modeled.
The little plaque above the head carries the four letters INRI, for the Latin Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the title Pilate ordered fixed to the cross. The pierced acanthus and the fleur-de-lis terminals follow a French baroque pattern, in which the ornament was never decoration for its own sake but a way of making the cross flower. White bronze gives the piece a cool, silvery tone that suits the depth of the piercing.
The Grand Baroque Crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
