Saint Kateri Tekakwitha sits veiled at the center of this rosary center, wrapped in a long mantle with her hands lowered before her. The frame around her beaded roundel breaks into leaves, grape clusters and small fleur-de-lis, with a ribbon banner arching over the top.
Kateri was born in 1656 in the Mohawk Valley, the daughter of a Mohawk chief and an Algonquin Christian mother, and was orphaned and scarred by the smallpox that took them. She was baptized at twenty, and the hostility that followed drove her to the mission village of Kahnawake near Montreal, where she spent her last four years in prayer and penance and died at twenty-four. Called the Lily of the Mohawks, she was canonized in 2012 as the first Native American saint, and she is honored on both sides of the New York and Canada border as a patroness of ecology and of all who pray out of doors.
