Pope Pius X and the Vision of Constantine is a crowded, ambitious little medal. The front sets a portrait of Pius X in an oval cartouche beneath the tiara and crossed keys, wreathed in olive and palm and lettered PIVS X PONT MAX, Pius the Tenth, Supreme Pontiff. Below him a crowned man holds a standard beside a veiled woman seated with a cross, Constantine and his mother St. Helena, who found the True Cross.
The reverse carries the story that binds them. A cloaked figure lifts his arm toward a cross standing in the sky, his horse and attendant waiting behind him, and the legend arching overhead reads IN HOC SIGNO VINCAS, in this sign may you conquer. It is the vision Constantine saw before the Milvian Bridge, the hour the Church remembers as an empire turning toward the cross.
