The Crowned Madonna and Stars cross medal is a small four-lobed cross with a standing Virgin filling its upright. She is veiled, her hands lowered and open at her sides, rays rising from her head, her feet resting on a rounded mound. The two side lobes are scattered with small raised stars, and a single star marks the lobe above her head and the one below her feet.
The open hands are the familiar gesture of the Virgin giving out graces, and the stars turn the little cross into a night sky gathered around her. Between them the piece holds two of the oldest Marian ideas together: Mary as the one through whom grace is poured out, and Mary as the woman crowned with stars in the Book of Revelation, standing in the heavens. There is no lettering. At an inch across it was made as an everyday medal, the sort carried for years without ceremony.
