The Our Lady of Walsingham plaque shows the Virgin crowned and enthroned between two slender turned pillars, a lily-topped sceptre in her right hand and the Christ Child seated on her knee with a book. Everything about the pose is deliberately archaic, following the medieval Seat of Wisdom image that the Walsingham shrine restored to English devotion.
A panel across the foot is lettered OUR LADY OF WALSINGHAM, naming the great shrine in Norfolk founded in 1061, when the lady of the manor was shown the house of the Annunciation and built its replica in an English field. For five hundred years Walsingham was known as England's Nazareth, and pilgrims and kings alike walked the last mile to it barefoot. The shrine was destroyed at the Reformation and restored in the twentieth century, and Mary is honoured there still as the woman who said yes at Nazareth, seated and steady, holding out her Son to whoever comes.
The Our Lady of Walsingham plaque was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the piece's vintage character.
