A young soldier in short Roman dress kneels on rough ground, a halo behind his head, one arm raised high with a small cross held in his fist while a large bird beats its wings at his breast. The modeling is loose and painterly, closer to the art medals of the turn of the last century than to ordinary struck devotional work.
These are the attributes of Saint Expeditus, the soldier-martyr invoked against delay. The story told of him has a crow croaking cras, Latin for tomorrow, while the saint tramples it down and lifts up the cross of hodie, today. He is asked for in urgent causes and by anyone who has put off what should be done now, and there are few devotions with a plainer point. The reverse is left as an open field with a spray of laurel and a rose along one edge, ready for an engraved name or date.
