The Vintage Bronze Servus Dei Valentinus Medal is small and strongly modelled. One face carries the bust of a tonsured friar in a hooded habit, shown full-face with a heavy brow and a broad jaw, more portrait than type. SERVUS and DEI stand to either side of his head, and a broad banner sweeps across the lower half lettered D. VALENTINUS.
Servus Dei, Servant of God, is the title the Church gives a person at the opening of a cause for canonisation, so a medal like this was made while that cause was still under way, struck for the people who had known him and wanted his memory kept. The other face shows the Virgin standing with her hands lowered and open and rays streaming from them, the Our Lady of Grace pose of the Miraculous Medal, so the friar is set alongside the woman he served.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
