The Vintage Bronze Old Roma Crucifix is worked in the older Roman taste, ornamented on every side. Foliate scrolls fill the flaring arm terminals, a crest of pierced leafwork rises above the crossbar, and the foot spreads into a wide scrolled base. The corpus itself is long and finely modelled, the head fallen forward, the loincloth knotted at the hip beneath a small banded titulus.
Roman devotional metalwork of this kind was made in the shadow of the great basilicas and carried home from the city by pilgrims, which is why the pattern turns up on rosaries far from Italy. The ornament is not decoration for its own sake: leafwork rising from a cross is the old image of the tree of life, the dead wood of Calvary breaking into leaf. At this size it makes a substantial end for a full five-decade rosary.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
