This praying woman is a milagro, one of the small votive figures carried to a shrine and pinned to a statue's robe or to a retablo, either in petition or in thanks for a favor received. She kneels with her head bare, her hands pressed together and lifted before her breast, her long skirt spreading wide to the ground in a few deep incised folds.
A milagro in the shape of a whole person stands for the one who prays or the one prayed for, where a hand, a heart or a leg would name the trouble more particularly. The tradition runs deep through Mexico and the Spanish-speaking world, where a small figure left at a shrine keeps a petition going long after the person who brought it has gone home.
