Product Details

The Vintage Bronze Cross of Lorraine is two-barred, the shorter arm set above the longer, with every terminal flared and notched. A small rosette marks one end of the lower arm and a spiked finial rises from the head. Both faces are left plain and lightly textured, so the strength of the piece lies entirely in its silhouette.

The two-barred cross came west from Byzantium and took its familiar name from the dukes of Lorraine, who carried it as a badge. The upper bar stands for the titulus, the board nailed above the head of Christ with the charge written on it, so the shape holds the whole inscription of the Passion in a single line of metal. In France it became a mark of identity and, in the last century, of resistance and hope, but its first meaning was always the cross. Finished alike on both sides, it reads the same whichever way it falls.

The cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
