Product Details

The Vintage Bronze Child's Colonial Spanish Crucifix is made to a child's scale. Behind the corpus a fan of feather-like rays spreads out to fill the angles of the crossing, the side arms end in ribbed, knopped terminals, and the shaft below tapers and swells again to a rounded bud at the foot. The whole piece is compact and softly rounded, with no sharp edges anywhere on it.

Crucifixes like this were given at baptism or first Communion throughout the Spanish colonies and often kept for a lifetime afterward, then handed on when the child who wore it had children of its own. The rays behind the corpus turn the cross toward glory as much as toward suffering, which is how it was meant to be explained to a young one holding it. At an inch and a half it suits an adult just as well, particularly anyone who prefers something small and unshowy.

The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an eighteenth-century colonial Spanish original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
