The Budded Heart Crucifix swells at each of its four terminals into a budded, heart-shaped lobe flanked by a pair of curling leaves, a form that reads as a bud about to open and as a heart at the same time. Set at the crossing, directly behind the head of the corpus, is a round medallion divided into radiating segments like an opened flower.
Budded crosses are an old family. Their swelling ends were traditionally read as the three petals of the Trinity, or as new growth breaking from the wood of the cross, and here that growth has taken the shape of a heart, which turns the whole design into a statement about love. The rayed medallion behind the bowed head does what a halo does, setting glory immediately behind the moment of death and drawing the eye to the centre of the cross, which is exactly where the old designers wanted it.
The Budded Heart Crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
