The Vintage Bronze St. Francis and St. Chiara Medal is a rectangular plaque with a saint on each face. The front shows Francis haloed in a knotted habit, standing among trees with birds in flight before him and more gathered on the ground at his feet. The reverse shows Clare, veiled and haloed, holding a tall stem of lilies and a covered vessel, her name arched above her: S. CHIARA.
The Italian spelling places the original in Assisi, where the two of them belong together. Francis preached to the birds and called the sun his brother. Clare left her family at eighteen to follow him, founded the Poor Clares, and the covered vessel she holds is the ciborium she carried out to face an army at her convent gate. Their friendship is one of the great stories of the Church, and this plaque keeps both halves of it in the hand at once.
