The reverse belongs to the petition. Below a small fleur-de-lis, five lines read ST. RAPHAEL PRESERVE US FROM ILL HEALTH AND ALL DANGER TO LIFE, set out in plain English rather than Latin — a directness that is rare on old devotional work and easy to love. Raphael's name means God heals. In the book of Tobit he joins young Tobias as a fellow traveler, guards him the whole way and gives him what cures his father's blindness, which is why he is invoked for health, for safe journeys and for those who look after the sick.
